Forget what you know about plastic mats available in the UK, these come from famous Horredsmatten AB in Sweden who have been producing them since they switched in the 1950's from weaving cotton rag rugs to plastic.  These rugs are as environmentally friendly as it is possible to get, with their way of mixing PVC with cotton yarn and are REACH certified to not contain any harmful substances.  This means that the rugs are soft to the touch and springy underfoot but aren't shiny like cheaper imitations and can be used indoors and out.   In addition they are mega easy to clean - you can hose them down or rinse them in the bath.
